a boardroom where public speaking is addressedPublic speaking is a form of communication designed to be delivered in a structured and deliberate manner.

The technique of Public Speaking is an art used to educate, inform and even influence small or large groups of people at any one time.

Improving your Public Speaking Techniques

In a recent pole of phobias and fears it was established that people are more scared of public speaking than they are of spiders or heights.

Obviously the thought of having to get up in front of an audience and try to get your message across in an interesting and compelling way can be very daunting to most of us.

Before giving a public speech you may find that you suffer some of the following affects.

  • You may begin to perspire uncontrollably.
  • Your mouth may become dry and your voice becomes hoarse.
  • Your heart rate can rise rapidly and you may get the sensation of butterflies.
  • You may begin to shake uncontrollably and your voice begins to stammer with nerves.

Any of the above affects may cause you to have a bad experience whilst giving a public speech and then cause negative feelings about doing it again in the future.

Building Confidence in Public Speaking

a public speaker noting key points during a public speechYour performance when giving a public speech depends a lot on your state of mind at the time and your perception of the situation. You have to be sure to have a confident frame of mind meaning if you go to give your public speech with a dismal outlook then it probably won’t go as planned.

If you wish to give a public speech and want to do this successfully, then here are some Public Speaking Techniques you can practice and use to boost your confidence before you go on to do your speech.

  • First calm yourself down by taking deep breaths.
  • Preparation is the key, practise your public speech until you know it word for word and if you have to give a demonstration it helps if you have practised doing that too.
  • If you can, close your eyes and imagine yourself giving the perfect speech and everything going well. This will help you prepare mentally.

There is no need for you to fear the group of people you will be delivering a public speech to because it is more than likely that the audience will want you to succeed in what you are trying to achieve.

This is where confidence is an issue again because not only do you have to have the confidence to stand in front of these people when public speaking in the first place but you also need to have an open mind and not automatically think they want you to fail.
