a golf ball about to sink into a holeGolf is a sport that has been played for hundreds of years now. What was once considered 'a mans game' is now enjoyed by men and women, both young and old all over the world.

You may think that golf is just a game where you hit a ball around a golf course all day, but let me tell you it's not as easy as it might appear to be. In fact golf requires experience, a high level of concentration and skill in order to be any good.

The game of golf can be played at many different levels (amateur through to professional). If you're lucky enough to be able to play at a professional level you could well expect fame and fortune as golf has a huge fan base and draws a lot of lucrative sponsorship deals.

Basics of Golf

a golf course with two bunkersTo play a game of golf, you must first hit a golf ball (using a driver) from a specially designated area called a teeing box. This is called a tee shot. When the ball lands you must then locate it and strike it again.

This is done using an array of specially designed golf clubs which are of different sizes. A golfer will aim to hit his ball towards the Golfing Green, which is an area of finely cut grass where the cup is located (usually marked by a flag).

How to Play Golf

When the golf ball is on the green the golfer will then proceed to use their putter to hit the ball and attempt to get it into the cup. Once achieved, the game is over for that particular hole. The idea behind the game of golf is to get the ball from the teeing box and into the hole in as few strokes as possible.

A Round of Golf means playing a number of holes in a particular order (usually a round of golf consists of 18 holes), the order of which is determined by the course and its layout.

Golfers will either walk the length of the course carrying their clubs with them, or can be transported using motorized golf carts. You can also play this sport on your own or with a group of friends as part of a social activity.

Improving Your Golfing Technique

The following are factors a golfer must take into consideration when taking their shot.

  • Which club to use
  • Wind speed
  • Wind direction
  • Location of the golfing green or hole
  • How much strength to hit the ball with
  • Technique and concentration
  • Bunkers and water hazards
